Underwriting Guidelines and Policies

Ongoing programs at KOJB receive support through underwriting. It's important to emphasize that sponsors' financial contributions do not provide them with the ability to influence program content or decisions. In just 30 seconds, convey the essentials and highlight the significance of your business in underwriting announcements tailored to your marketing needs.

KOJB is committed to adhering to FCC regulations applicable to non-commercial airwaves while crafting underwriting announcements. Our guidelines ensure compliance with FCC standards, align with the KOJB mission, and maintain the requirements of our non-commercial educational license. Specifically, underwriters must identify themselves by stating their legal or trade name in the announcements.

The acknowledgement copy MUST include:

  • Legal or trade name stated to identify the underwriter.

The acknowledgment copy may include any or all of the following elements:

  • Contact details: telephone number, email address, website, and business location or service area.
  • Operating hours and days of operation.
  • Value-neutral descriptions of product lines or services.
  • Brand names, trade names, and listings of products or services.
  • Visual descriptions of specific products.
  • Listing of up to three (3) products or services.
  • Product origin (e.g., Belgian Waffles or French Bread).
  • Intended use of the product (e.g., Men's Suits or Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner).
  • Product content (e.g., Silk Blouses, Leather Shoes).
  • Form of delivery or method of preparation (e.g., made from grapes or cooked with herbs).
  • Organization's mission and/or corporate non-promotional slogans, provided they align with these guidelines.

However, the following elements CANNOT BE included:

  • Qualitative language or superlatives (e.g., handcrafted, homemade, great, wonderful).
  • Comparative language (e.g., better, most).
  • "Calls to Action" (e.g., call today, come by).
  • Referencing the location of the business using another business as a reference (e.g., located next to or nearby).
  • Price or value information (including terms like free, affordable, discount, or interest rates).
  • Inducements to buy, sell, rent, or lease (e.g., 6 months free when you buy or lifetime guarantee).
  • Endorsements (e.g., recommended by 4 out of 5 doctors, used by professionals).
  • Demonstrations of consumer satisfaction.
  • First-person statements (e.g., I urge you, our club, or we are working together).
  • Second-person statements (e.g., making your smile bright).
  • Announcements of a religious nature, associated with a political position, cause, or controversial issue. This includes statements like "Support for KOJB comes from Jane Doe, a supporter of universal health care."

Furthermore, pre-produced announcements, underwriter voicing, jingles, as well as music and/or sound effects are prohibited for use. KOJB announcers will be responsible for voicing, and final approval of the copy must be reserved by KOJB.

Why such restrictions?

These restrictions are implemented to uphold the non-commercial format mandated by our FCC license, preserving the integrity of our relationship with KOJB listeners, members, and the community. By adhering to these guidelines, we maintain the non-commercial nature that our audience values. KOJB limits the frequency of underwriting and paid public service announcements to a maximum of eight times in one broadcast day, with a cap of twice within a single program. As a non-commercial radio station supported by listener members, KOJB does not accept political underwriting that advocates for any specific candidate or political party. These measures are in place to ensure the station's commitment to its mission and community-focused programming.

The approval of the Station Manager at KOJB is required for all underwriting copy, including corporate slogans. It's important to note that underwriting on KOJB does not imply, in any way, that sponsors may influence program content or programming decisions.

Donor Privacy Policy

In accordance with federal and state laws regarding donor privacy and data security, KOJB does not disclose donor information to third parties nor rent donor information to, or exchange such information with political organizations and/or candidates.

KOJB Underwriting vs. Social Media Marketing: Understanding the Benefits

Underwriting on KOJB and social media marketing are two powerful ways to support our community radio station while promoting your business or organization. This document will help you understand the benefits of each and how they can help attract new clients to your brand.

Underwriting on KOJB 90.1 FM

Underwriting on KOJB means your business or organization supports our Indigenous community radio station by sponsoring specific programs or the station as a whole. Unlike traditional advertising, underwriting is a more subtle form of promotion that aligns your brand with community values and public service.

Key Benefits of Underwriting:

  1. Enhanced Credibility: Underwriting on KOJB allows your business to be associated with a trusted and respected community resource. It shows that you support Indigenous culture and the community, enhancing your brand’s reputation.
  2. Audience Loyalty: KOJB listeners are deeply engaged and have a strong connection to the station. By underwriting, your brand is introduced to a loyal audience that values the community-oriented content provided by KOJB.
  3. Uninterrupted Messaging: Underwriting spots are aired without commercial clutter. This means your message stands out more effectively as it is not surrounded by competing advertisements.
  4. Local and Cultural Connection: As an underwriter, your brand is linked with Indigenous culture and the values KOJB represents. This connection can be particularly powerful for businesses looking to build relationships within the Indigenous community or among those who support it.
  5. Public Acknowledgment: Your support is publicly acknowledged on-air, on KOJB’s website, and across our digital platforms, reinforcing your brand’s community presence.

Social Media Marketing with KOJB

Social media marketing involves promoting your business or organization through KOJB’s social media channels. This could include posts, stories, or even collaborative campaigns on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Key Benefits of Social Media Marketing:

  1. Wider Reach: Social media has the potential to reach a broader audience beyond KOJB’s immediate listenership. This can include people who follow KOJB for cultural updates, community news, or who engage with our content online.
  2. Targeted Marketing: Social media allows for targeted marketing efforts. You can choose to focus on specific demographics, interests, or even geographic areas to ensure your message reaches the right audience.
  3. Interactive Engagement: Social media is inherently interactive. Potential clients can comment, share, or engage with your content in real-time, creating opportunities for direct communication and relationship-building.
  4. Content Flexibility: With social media, you can share a variety of content types—images, videos, articles, or live streams—offering multiple ways to showcase your brand’s story and offerings.
  5. Analytics and Insights: Social media platforms provide detailed analytics, helping you track the effectiveness of your campaigns and adjust your strategy based on what works best.

Which Should You Choose?

Underwriting is ideal if you want to build brand credibility and loyalty within the Indigenous community and align your business with cultural and community values.

Social Media Marketing is great for reaching a broader audience, engaging interactively with potential clients, and leveraging digital content to tell your brand’s story.

Combining Both: The most effective strategy may involve a combination of both underwriting and social media marketing. By underwriting KOJB programs, you gain credibility and community trust. By pairing that with social media marketing, you can extend your reach, engage more dynamically with potential clients, and measure the impact of your campaigns.
